Privacy Policy — Flip Translate

Flip Translate is a Chrome extension that translates web pages between English and Hebrew and flips the layout direction (RTL/LTR). This document explains exactly what data the extension handles, where it is sent, and what is stored.

What we do NOT collect

• We do not collect personal information, browsing history, or any analytics.
• We do not use cookies, tracking pixels, or advertising identifiers.
• We do not have our own servers, backends, or databases.
• We do not share, sell, or transfer any data to third parties beyond the single translation service described below.

What is sent to a third party

To translate text, the extension sends the visible text content of the page you are viewing to the MyMemory translation API at api.mymemory.translated.net. This happens only when you actively click the translate button. Nothing is sent in the background while you browse.

If you optionally provide an email address in the extension settings (used to increase the free MyMemory translation quota), that email is passed as a query parameter (de) in translation requests. Providing an email is entirely optional.

MyMemory is operated by Translated S.r.l. Their handling of the text you send is governed by their own privacy policy, available at mymemory.translated.net/doc/privacy.php .

On-device translation (when available)

On Chrome versions that support the built-in on-device Translator API, Flip Translate attempts to translate locally on your device first. When the on-device translator is used, no text leaves your browser. The MyMemory API is only used as a fallback.

Local storage

The extension uses Chrome's extension storage in two places, both on your device only:

• chrome.storage.local — stores the optional email address you enter for the MyMemory quota extension. This never leaves your device except when attached to a translation request as described above.
• chrome.storage.session — stores per-tab translation state (whether the current tab is currently translated, and in which direction). This state is automatically cleared when you close the tab or restart the browser.

Permissions and why we need them

• activeTab — to read the visible text of the tab you are looking at, only after you click the translate button.
• storage — to remember your optional email and per-tab translation state.
• scripting — to inject the translation and RTL-flip scripts into the page when needed.
• host_permissions: api.mymemory.translated.net — to send text for translation to the MyMemory API.

Your choices

• You can uninstall the extension at any time; all local storage is removed automatically.
• You can remove your stored email from the extension settings at any time.
• You can use the extension without providing an email at all.

Children's privacy

The extension is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone.

Changes to this policy

If this policy ever changes, the updated version will be published at the same URL where you are reading it now, with a revised "Last updated" date at the top.
